WASHINGTON, DC – August 17, 2016 – Three community advocates were recently selected to receive the Community Sentinel Award for Environmental Stewardship, presented this year by Americans Against Fracking, Earthworks, FracTracker Alliance, Halt The Harm Network, and Stop the Frack Attack and sponsored by the Park Foundation and the 11th Hour Project. Award recipients are honored by peers for their efforts to document and address the harmful effects of oil and gas development in the U.S. The 2016 Community Sentinel Award winners are:

  • Alma Hasse – Citizens Allied for Integrity and Accountability, Fruitland, ID
  • Alex Lotorto – Energy Justice Network, Milford, PA
  • Vera Scroggins – Citizens for Clean Water, Brackney, PA

The actions of Community Sentinels like this year’s awardees make a tremendous difference in the collective fight to prevent environmental and public health harms caused by extraction and to encourage a national transition to safer, renewable forms of energy.

“We were honored to have 20 nominees for this prestigious award this year. All of them are tirelessly and selflessly working to protect their communities,” said Brook Lenker, Executive Director of the FracTracker Alliance, which organized the award partnership. “The three recipients of this award – in various ways – exemplify caring, committed people who are helping their neighbors, safeguarding the places they love, and championing a better energy future.”

Each recipient will be awarded a $1,000 prize and recognized at a reception hosted by FracTracker Alliance at The Mott House in Washington, DC on Thursday evening, September 8, 2016. For $75 a ticket, supporters can attend the awards ceremony and a reception featuring heavy hors d’oeuvres and two drink tickets. Beverages for the evening include craft beer donated by Lagunitas Brewing Company and wine from Armstrong Valley Winery in central PA.
