Fracking Infrastructure
Explore our site’s various articles and maps about the infrastructure impacts and considerations associated with oil and gas development.
-
- Compressor Stations – A machine that raises the pressure of a gas by drawing in low pressure gas and discharging it at significantly higher pressures. These facilities enable natural gas to flow through pipelines.
- Pipelines- In the United States, there’s an estimated 3 million miles of pipelines transporting crude oil, refined petroleum products, natural gas liquids, and gas from fracking wells and cryogenic facilities to processors & then eventually to consumers. Pipelines include distribution lines that take gas to residents and other consumers, as well as transmission and gathering lines which bring fossil fuels from well sites to processing facilities and distant markets.
- Wells – “Fracking” wells are drilled thousands of feet into the ground to reach a target oil or gas reservoir. The well then turns horizontally to intersect and remain within the reservoir (e.g. shale layer) for distances that can reach over three miles in length. A mixture of water, sand and chemicals are injected into the well at extremely high pressures, and explode out of the well bore to crack open the shale rock, releasing oil and gas.
Other infrastructure includes Class II wells (which include wastewater disposal wells, enhanced oil recovery wells, and hydrocarbon storage wells), cryogenic facilities, frac sand mines, fractionation facilities, petrochemical facilities, power plants and stations, processing plants, pumping stations, and storage facilities.

Proposed Palmetto Pipeline: At what cost?
/by Karen EdelsteinBy Karen Edelstein, Eastern Program Coordinator Asserting that the proposed Palmetto Pipeline is essential to supply gas and diesel to the residents of south Georgia and northern Florida, Houston-based energy giant Kinder Morgan has found themselves in the crosshairs of yet another battle. Connecting to the existing Plantation Pipeline, the proposed $1 billion Palmetto Pipeline […]
A Push For Pipelines
/by FracTracker AllianceBy Bill Hughes, WV Community Liaison For anyone who even casually follows Marcellus and Utica shale gas exploration and production, such as in the active gas fields of West Virginia or Southwestern PA or Ohio, we know there are many concerns surrounding the natural gas production process. These issues range from air pollution, water consumption […]
Surveyor Symbols & Signs – A Guide
/by FracTracker AllianceThe following guide is a simplified description of a variety of markings that are used by land surveyors. Throughout an active shale gas field, the first signs of pending expansions are the simple markings of stakes, flags, and pins. Many months or even years before the chain saw fells the first tree or the first […]
Controversial 178-mile-long parallel pipelines proposed for NY’s Hudson Valley/Northern NJ
/by Karen EdelsteinBy Karen Edelstein, Eastern Program Coordinator Over the past seven years, there has been a very strong upswing in domestic oil production coming from Bakken Formation in North Dakota. Extraction rates increased over 700% between November 2007 and November 2015, to over 1.2 million barrels per day. With all this oil coming out of the […]
NYS targets an end to coal power
/by Karen EdelsteinBy Karen Edelstein, Eastern Program Coordinator It’s been just over a year since New York Governor Andrew Cuomo made public his administration’s decision to ban high-volume hydraulic fracturing in the state. A formal ban was established in June 2015. While Cuomo’s politics and record may be controversial on some fronts, he has most certainly shown important […]
A Climate Disaster – California in state of emergency as a result of massive natural gas leak
/by Kyle Ferrar, MPHBy Kyle Ferrar, Western Program Coordinator, FracTracker Alliance A natural gas well equipment failure in southern California has resulted in the largest point release of methane to the atmosphere in U.S. history. California Governor Jerry Brown has declared a California state of emergency for the incident, and the California Air Resources Board (CARB) has identified the […]
Oil Train Decoupled in Pittsburgh, No Injuries
/by FracTracker AllianceDangerously Close Call Today a train carrying oil products decoupled, or separated, in the City of Pittsburgh. Collaborators at CMU report that this morning an oil train decoupled along the tracks that run past the Bellefield boiler and under Forbes Avenue in Oakland, a very populated section of the city. While no spills, explosions, or injuries were reported, […]
Florida resolutions opposing unconventional oil drilling
/by Karen EdelsteinBy Karen Edelstein, Eastern Program Coordinator Florida, where there has long been an interest in drilling for oil, has recently come into the cross-hairs for unconventional extraction several miles beneath the state. Oil drilling has had spotty and elusive success in the Sunshine State, but new technologies like hydraulic fracturing – fracking – could potentially provide […]
Additional Oil & Gas Photos on FracTracker
/by FracTracker AllianceOne of the many services that FracTracker offers is access to oil and gas photos. These have been contributed to our website by partners & FracTracker staff and can be used free of charge for non-commercial purposes. Please site the photographer if one is listed, however. Over the last few months we have added additional oil and gas photos […]
Drilling, Emergency Preparedness, & Public Engagement
/by Guest AuthorBy Danny Kallich, Southwest Pennsylvania Environmental Health Project This article examines whether emergency responders are prepared in rural areas for oil and gas drilling emergencies, how people may be put at risk if the proper procedures aren’t in place, and other critical safety questions that citizens in Southwest Pennsylvania should be asking. The rapid spread […]
Nearly 2 Million Pennsylvanians Live Within a Kilometer of Oil & Gas Wells
/by Matt Kelso, BABy Matt Kelso, Manager of Data & Technology In October 2014, the FracTracker Alliance performed an analysis showing an estimated 1.2 million people lived within a half mile of oil and gas wells in Pennsylvania. We have now updated the analysis, but this time, the unit of measure is one kilometer (0.62 miles). PA Population Within […]
Time Sequence Map of PA Drilling Available
/by Matt Kelso, BAPennsylvania’s Drake Well is known for sparking the first oil boom in the United States in 1859. In more recent history, the industry has resurrected hydrocarbon extraction in the Commonwealth through unconventional oil and gas drilling – or fracking. Between 2002 and October 28, 2015, at least 16,826 of these high-impact wells have been approved […]
The Ultimate Price of PA State Forest Drilling
/by FracTracker AllianceBy Ted Auch, Matt Kelso, and Sam Rubright PA DCNR recently released a draft State Forest Resource Management Plan. The draft plan, last revised in 2007, is an important tool that the Bureau of Forestry (BOF) uses to help manage Pennsylvania’s approximately 2.2 million acre state forest system. Approximately 1.5 million acres of state forest lands […]
A Fresh Look at Oil and Gas Drilling from Europe
/by FracTracker AllianceBy Ted Auch, Kyle Ferrar, and Samantha Rubright with Max Gruenig Fourteen days is not nearly enough time to fully understand the complex differences between oil and gas drilling issues and policies in the United States and several European Union countries. The EU’s drilling policies, geography, and the industry’s level of activity are quite distinct […]
Parked Oil Trains in Berks County, PA
/by FracTracker AllianceBy Matt Kelso, Manager of Data & Technology Kirk Jalbert, Manager of Community Based Research & Engagement The Risks of Crude Oil Trains As new oil fields boomed across North America in recent years, drillers looked for ways to get the product to refineries thousands of miles away. One solution was to use the nation’s […]
