Fracking Infrastructure
Explore our site’s various articles and maps about the infrastructure impacts and considerations associated with oil and gas development.
-
- Compressor Stations – A machine that raises the pressure of a gas by drawing in low pressure gas and discharging it at significantly higher pressures. These facilities enable natural gas to flow through pipelines.
- Pipelines- In the United States, there’s an estimated 3 million miles of pipelines transporting crude oil, refined petroleum products, natural gas liquids, and gas from fracking wells and cryogenic facilities to processors & then eventually to consumers. Pipelines include distribution lines that take gas to residents and other consumers, as well as transmission and gathering lines which bring fossil fuels from well sites to processing facilities and distant markets.
- Wells – “Fracking” wells are drilled thousands of feet into the ground to reach a target oil or gas reservoir. The well then turns horizontally to intersect and remain within the reservoir (e.g. shale layer) for distances that can reach over three miles in length. A mixture of water, sand and chemicals are injected into the well at extremely high pressures, and explode out of the well bore to crack open the shale rock, releasing oil and gas.
Other infrastructure includes Class II wells (which include wastewater disposal wells, enhanced oil recovery wells, and hydrocarbon storage wells), cryogenic facilities, frac sand mines, fractionation facilities, petrochemical facilities, power plants and stations, processing plants, pumping stations, and storage facilities.

1.7 Million Wells in the U.S. – A 2015 Update
/by Matt Kelso, BAUpdated National Well Data By Matt Kelso, Manager of Data & Technology In February 2014, the FracTracker Alliance produced our first version of a national well data file and map, showing over 1.1 million active oil and gas wells in the United States. We have now updated that data, with the total of wells […]
Largest Coastal Spill in 25 years [in California]
/by Kyle Ferrar, MPHBy Kyle Ferrar, Western Program Coordinator The Santa Barbara Pipeline Spill On May 19, 2015, just 20 miles north of Santa Barbara, a heavily corroded section of pipeline ruptured spilling upwards of 101,000 gallons. The pipeline was operated by Plains All American LLC, based out of Houston Texas, and was used to move crude oil […]
An urgent need? Atlantic Coast Pipeline Discussion and Map
/by Karen EdelsteinBy Karen Edelstein, Eastern Program Coordinator This article was originally posted on 10 July 2015, and then updated on 22 January 2016 and 16 February 2016. OH Class II Injection Wells – Waste Disposal and Industry Water Demand
/by Ted Auch, PhDBy Ted Auch, PhD – Great Lakes Program Coordinator Waste Trends in Ohio It has been nearly 2 years since last we looked at the injection well landscape in Ohio. Are existing disposals wells receiving just as much waste as before? Have new injection wells been added to the list of those permitted to receive oil […]
Unconventional Drilling Activity Down In Pennsylvania
/by Matt Kelso, BABy Matt Kelso, Manager of Data & Technology Wells Spudded (Drilled) Unconventional oil and gas drilling is well established in Pennsylvania, with over 9,200 drilled wells, an additional 7,200 permitted locations that have not yet been drilled, and 5,300 violations all happening since the turn of the millennium. It took a while for the industry to […]
Offshore Oil and Gas Drilling: Risks to the Sea Otter
/by FracTracker AllianceBy Emily Watson, FracTracker Summer Intern Sea otters, an endangered keystone species, are at risk due to offshore oil and gas drilling spills. Along the west coast of the U.S., this marine mammal’s habitat is commonly near offshore drilling sites, specifically in California and Alaska. Sea Otters – a Keystone Species Sea otter numbers used […]
Utica Drilling in Pennsylvania
/by Matt Kelso, BAIn Pennsylvania, the vast majority of unconventional oil and gas activity is focused on the Marcellus Shale formation, a Devonian period deposit of black shale with a high hydrocarbon content, which requires horizontal drilling and large scale hydraulic fracturing to produce enough oil and gas to make the drilling economically viable. This formation was created […]
Pipelines vs Oil Trains
/by FracTracker AllianceBy Juliana Henao, Communications Intern Media outlets have been very focused recently on reporting oil train derailments and explosions. Additionally, the Keystone XL pipeline has hastened political debates and arguments for years by both political parties since its initial proposal in 2008 – and the May 19th pipeline oil spill in California isn’t helping matters. In the […]
Increasing Risk from Exploding Crude Trains
/by FracTracker AllianceBy Randy Sargent, Carnegie Mellon CREATE Lab and Samantha Malone, FracTracker Alliance In the past two years, crude oil trains have exploded 10 times, killing 47 people. It could have been much worse. Eight of the ten trains exploded in rural areas. The train that flattened half the business district of the small […]
CA Crude Oil by Rail Shipments and Railway Accidents
/by Kyle Ferrar, MPHBy Kyle Ferrar, Western Program Coordinator, FracTracker Alliance Incidents in California involving oil-by-rail cars increased from 3 in 2011 to 25 in 2013. There were 24 incidents within the first 6 months of 2014, and oil spills from rail cars increased from 98 in 2010 to 182 in 2013.1 With such an increase in oil train incidents, […]
